I have always struggled with perspective, so for this week I tried to just gain an understanding of basic shapes before moving onto more complex forms. I struggled to grasp drawing anything but cubes for a long time and grew fustrated when trying to draw landscapes. I deceided to watch more videos about perspective and research it some more. I spent a long time doing this this week but gained more confidence drawing objects afterwards compared to how I was at the start of the week. I have linked a few of the videos I watched below. I also tried tracing over photographs to figure out vanishing points, an area I was struggling on.

Week two: three point and beyond

This week was building upon the skills we learnt last week, using persepective in more complex ways.

After watching many tutorials the week before, I began feeling a little more comfortable with perspective. I began the week by drawing still lifes from differnet angles as well as just basic objects such as coke bottles or pencil sharpeners. I also tried to challenge myslef by sketching a steam train. I found thinking about it of small shapes and building the form up from there an easier way to tackle it. While not perfect at all, I think it shows progress in my persepctive skills. Part of the task was to try and draw your classmates in persepctive, I am quite proud of the latter two illustrations and think they work well. I wanted to use the skills to draw a full illustration, so I redrew a frame from an animated film in persepective. I included the linework from the illustration to clearly show the perspective in action.

After these two weeks I have gone from having little knowelege on perspective and it confusing and frustrating me to feeling I atleast know the basics. I will continue to practice this in my own time as I understand how important it is to being a successful illustrator. I completed some of this work after the project offically finihsed, revising my work on perspective and trying to master the basic fundamentals.

artists that utalise perspective

While researching persepective online, I found many artists that rely on persepctive within there work. I have linked to all of the websites I used to reseach below and embedded some images of the peices that left the biggest impression in me.

week three: thumbnail visuals

What's the brief?

Learning how to quickley and thoughfully get your ideas down on paper is a very important skill for an illustrator to have. Working on A3 sheets, we were tasked with generating atleast fourty differnent thumbnail ideas. As the week progresses five ideas should be selected and developed and refined and work them into more detailed client visuals. The subject matter of the thumbnails must be for a play from a provided list. I chose Peter Pan.

Helpful Resources:
I came across this video while looking a differnt thumbnail techniques on Youtube and found it really interesting. The way the illustartor explains his processs was easy to undersstand and interesting to see. He disccusses preliminary sketches and howw early develeopmental work doesn't have to be perfect, just legeible enough for you to understand.
Thumbnails:

Though I always make thumbnails before making an illustrtaion, I do not usually make so many. While lots of these ideas are not very good, I found some of my favourites where ideas I would'nt have come up with if I had stopped after a couple.  I used coloured pencils, Posca pens and fineliners to make them.
Development of ideas:

I mainly focused on experimenting with type style, colour and composition in these ideas. I also worked on pose and developing the shapes of the visual elements in the thumbnails. I return to my initial research to see if my work is still linking back to the source material.
Final Client Thumbnails:

For the final more complete thumbnails, I did the first two digitally and the last one traditionally with Posca pens. I found making the thumbnails digitally a lot easier and faster, as I primaryly work digitally however I had enjoyed thumbnailing with Posca's so I wanted to try that again. I wanted each idea to be very differnt from eachother, giving a wider take on the brief. I think I was only able to do this because of the ammount of thumbnails I made initially. I enjoyed this brief, learing lots of useful skills and understanding importance of thumbnails within my work.
