This week explores conceptual illustration. I have been given the article attached here and have to create a full illustration and a spot illustration to accompany it. The title is a "Tide of disapproval awaits new round of UK water companies’ price rises".
RESEARCH
FURTHER READING
I began by reading through the article and finding key words and general ideas to start my work. I think conceptual illustration is going to be a struggle for me, especially with thesubject mayter outside my comfort zone.
DISECTING THE ARTICLE
I began by breaking the article into keywords. I thought this would help me figure out what imagery to use. It also helped me understand the article more.
I also looked into the target audience for my article. It seemed to be affluent socially conscious people who are forward looking and embrace change. They also tend to be digitally savvy. They were usually older adults, with slightly more women than men. This will influence the style and tone of my work.

PINTEREST BOARD
I looked at other artist's editorial illustrations as inpirtation into style and how they handles topics.
ANDREA D'AQUIN
WORKSHOP ON CONCEPTUAL THINKING
This workshop centred around developing lateral thinking skills. The task was to use items found on our desks as central elements in an illustration. I found this exercise really fun and benefical.
THUMBNAILS and INITIAL IDEAS
I began by sketching out ideas and images, trying to find a clever way to show rising water prices. I felt like nothing was working.
DEVELOPMENT
I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere thumbnailing, so I moved into Illustrator and tried to make some illustrations that way.
I felt that even though I made a competant piece of work technically, it was incredibly boring. I moved into Procreate, trying different thing and seeing if anything was working. I felt like I couldn't get any concptual ideas across. I felt stuck.
I tried using an idea from the thumbnailing stage, showing people being washed away by water, while a bit more visually intresting, it didn't get the message of the article across.
GETTING KNOWHERE FAST...
After speaking with Dwayne, I realised I was't getting anywhere. With one day left until summative assessment, I took advice and used this as a "24hour". brief from then on.

BACK TO THUMBNAILING
I wanted to do a humourous illustration, inspired by Jean Jullien and Moose. After talking with Dwayne, he gave me the idea to do an illustration around the theme of selling water on the black market.

REFELCTING
I really struggled with this project. The final results are not something I am happy with. I feel all the work i've produced doesn't really feel like my work. I want to try and come back to this at some point, and also use this project as a learning curve. I want my work to feel like my own, that is something I'm really going to try with in the next projects. I'm really unhappy with the final main illustartion. If I have enough time, I want to try and redo that specifically. I feel it doesn't translate the idea of the tap water scarcity, with the illustration depicting bottled water. I also think the final illustration isn't polished enough.
TRYING AGAIN
ALTERNATE IDEA
I created an alternate illustration. This included a rubber duck on its side in an empty bath.
