GIANT TURNIP
WHAT'S THE BRIEF?
Create a sample of illustrations for the folk tale The Giant Turnip to act as a proof of concept. This is a sorry often used in nurseries and very early primary school, so would be very well suited to a board book. I've included a pdf of the story below.
RESEARCH
LOOKING AT RUSSIAN FAIRY TALE ILLUSTRATION
The Giant Turnip originated from Russia, so I felt it important to look at illustrations from that time. While very different from my style of working, I find the flat compositions to be very interesting, as if all the characters are 2D.
ERIC CARLE
I love Carle's paper cut technique. I try and replicate this in my digital style by drawing mostly with the selection tool, which creates sharp lines and imperfect shapes.
SARA OGLIVIE
I love Sara Oglivie's use of colour. She gets some very bright but harmonious combinations.
IDEAS
SPREAD ONE
For spread one, I wanted to illustrate the scene where all the characters finally pull the turnip out of the ground.
