COUNTING ANIMALS
WHAT'S THE BRIEF?
I realised when starting to make my more complicated picture book I really didn't know anything about making the books at all. So I thought I'd give myself a week to make a very simple counting animals board book to get the ball rolling and trial making a whole book before I dive into a more complicated and narrative driven piece.
RESEARCH
HOW DO YOU EVEN MAKE A PICTURE BOOK??
Good question! It's quite complicated. I had a look at a bunch of videos and blog posts about it to prepare myself. Not all these people are great illustrators, but they have good tips for planning and productivity.

HOW MANY PAGES IS IT GOING TO BE?
I need to figure this out straight away. 32 pages or 16 spreads is the most common format for picture books but 40 pages and 24 page are also very common.

A board book is a sub genre of the picture book that is designed for the youngest of children, babies, and infants. Some features of a board book include:
- Board Books are printed on durable paperboard. The entire board book, even the inner pages, is made of highly durable paperboard that is specially folded and bound.
- Board Books have rounded corners for babies. The corner pages of board books are rounded out as to not harm any curious babies.
- Board Books have 12-24 pages. Board books tend to be shorter than hardcover books due to it’s thick paperboard pages
Hard backs however are:
- Collectible: If you are a book collector, you most likely prefer hardback books over paperbacks because they’re more durable.
- Protective: The outside cover works to protect the inner pages and the pages are bound with stitching or glue.
- Hardcovers are Collectible: If you are a book collector, you most likely prefer hardback books over paperbacks because they’re more durable.

LOOKING AT BOARD BOOKS
After my research I've decided this book will be the following:
- 24 page/ 16 spread book
- Self ended
- Board book
